The Lignite bed was found in the shallow depths of the Neyveli lands during the construction of irrigation wells. There are two popular forests near Neyveli namely Muthupettai Mangrove Forest which is exactly 76 kilometres from Neyveli near Thiruvarur city of Tamil Nadu and Puliancholai forest. It is about 83 kilometres distance from the township. This forest is exactly located in the foothills of popular Kollimalai that is very close to Thiruchy. The thick dense forests remain best for adventurous activities like mountain climbing, camping and trekking. Moreover, they are very famous for medicinal plants and herbs other than its scenic beauty.

It is said that Neyveli Township is planned just like Chandigarh city. If you have been to Chandigarh, you would easily find out lots of common blocks and plan structure in Neyveli. The entire town is planned in a modern way and is considered to be one of the well planned townships in the country. The township is divided into blocks similar to Chandigarh plan. The size of each block is 1000 metres by 700 metres. Moreover, the main roads of the city are assembled with rubberized on the top layer.  There are about 21,000 housing quarters that vary among hostel type buildings. Added to it, there are also six apartments that are two floor flat – single cottage type quarters constructed in the Neyveli Township. Before the houses were constructed using the raw material concrete. Presently they are using first class quality hollow blocks for the entire construction purposes that is actually a derivative of lignite.
